FAQs

Q: What is GDPR?

A: The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a European Union (EU) regulation regarding personal data that went into effect on the 25th of May, 2018.

Q: What is the aim of GDPR?

A: The aim of GDPR is to protect individual privacy and empower individuals so that they have greater control over how companies or organizations that offer goods or services to EU citizens, no matter where they live in the world, use and share their personal data.

Q: Why is IEEE subject to GDPR?

A: IEEE is an international organization that, in some cases, collects, stores, and processes personal data of EU citizens. As a result, IEEE may be subject to GDPR.

Q: What is the impact of GDPR on IEEE Events?

A: Event Organizers must now correctly manage personal data about attendees, speakers, exhibitors, and event participants. This includes ensuring the legal basis for collecting their personal information, obtaining consent, managing data subject requests, and being able to provide auditable data regarding these details.

Q: What is considered Personal Data under GDPR?

A: Any information relating to an identified or identifiable person (data subject). Examples include name, telephone number, email address, location data, IP address or one or more factors specific to the physical, physiological, genetic, mental, economic, cultural, or social identity of that person.

Q: What should I do if a Data Breach occurs?

A: In the event you suspect a data breach or mishandling of Personally Identifiable Information (PII), you must report the incident to IEEE immediately at privacy@ieee.org. IEEE will investigate the matter and report the data breach to regulatory authorities within 72 hours of first becoming aware of the breach.
